Description

This one-hour CPD session offers family mediators, legal professionals, and anyone working with families in the justice system the chance to better understand the role of McKenzie Friends in supporting litigants in person.

We’re delighted to welcome:

  • Deryn Hall – Volunteer McKenzie Friend with first-hand experience of providing practical, non-legal support in family cases.
  • Tamsin Roques – Manager of the Family Court Support Service and Domestic Abuse Service at Norfolk Community Law Service, bringing deep insight into the challenges faced by vulnerable court users and how McKenzie Friends can help.

The session will cover:

  • What McKenzie Friends are and the limits of their role.
  • When and how families may benefit from their support.
  • The risks and responsibilities involved.
  • How McKenzie Friends interact with mediators, solicitors, and court services.
  • Case examples from Norfolk Community Law Service.

Who should attend:

  • Family mediators (legal aid and private).
  • Trainee and newly accredited mediators.
  • Professionals supporting families through separation, domestic abuse, or family court proceedings.
  • Anyone interested in the practical realities of McKenzie Friends in the family justice system.

This is a rare opportunity to hear directly from practitioners working at the frontline of family court support, and to build your understanding of how McKenzie Friends operate within (and sometimes outside of) the formal legal system.
