Accredited Mediator

Home Based
The families who need mediation most deserve the best mediators.

At The Family Mediation Trust we have built our reputation on keeping our doors open to everyone — not just those who can afford to pay. Legal aid funded mediation is at the heart of what we do, and we are looking for accredited mediators who share that commitment.

This is not the right role for everyone. Legal aid work is demanding. The cases are often complex, the clients are often vulnerable, and the stakes are always high. But for the right mediator — one who came into this profession to make a real difference — it is also the most rewarding work there is.

What we offer

We know that mediators do their best work when they are properly supported. At the Trust you will find:
✅ A dedicated, highly efficient admin team who handle all client-facing work outside the mediation room — so you can focus entirely on your clients
✅ Paid holiday and sick pay
✅ Mental health support
✅ Regular PPC supervision and funded CPD
✅ A collaborative, values-led team who genuinely care about the families we serve and about each other
✅ Manageable waiting times — we work hard to ensure clients are not left waiting

The role

You will carry a mixed caseload covering child arrangements, financial matters and all issues mediation across both legal aid and private clients. We welcome mediators who hold the Child Inclusive Mediation (CIM) qualification, and we actively support those who wish to work towards it.
You will work in line with FMC standards and Legal Aid Agency requirements, supported by a team that understands those frameworks and makes compliance as straightforward as possible.
What we are looking for
  • FMCA accreditation — essential
  • Experience of legal aid funded work, or a genuine willingness to take it on
  • CIM qualification desirable but not essential
  • A commitment to relational, client-centred mediation
  • Someone who wants to be part of something that matters
About The Family Mediation Trust

We are a growing, well-regarded service with a strong reputation in the sector — including with the judiciary and the Legal Aid Agency. We believe that access to quality mediation should not depend on your ability to pay, and we work every day to make that a reality.

If you are looking for a role where your skills are valued, your wellbeing is taken seriously, and your work genuinely changes lives — we would very much like to hear from you.
Who we are looking for

You are an FMCA accredited mediator, currently registered with the Family Mediation Council. That is the one non-negotiable.
Beyond that, we are looking for someone who:
  • Has genuine experience of legal aid funded work — or a clear commitment to taking it on. This is not a box to tick; it is central to what the Trust does and why we exist
  • Understands the complexity of cases involving children, finances and property — and approaches that complexity with skill and care rather than formula
  • Holds the Child Inclusive Mediation qualification, or is actively working towards it. We will support the right candidate in getting there
  • Communicates well — with clients, with colleagues and with the administrative team that supports you. Mediation is relational work, and so is being part of this team
  • Can work independently and manage their own caseload, while knowing when to pick up the phone to a colleague or their PPC
  • Is familiar with Legal Aid processes and the LAA framework — or is honest about where the gaps are and willing to learn
If you meet most of this but not all of it, please still get in touch. We are more interested in finding the right person than in ticking every box.
What working with us looks like

We have thought carefully about what it means to properly support the people who do this work. These are not token gestures — they reflect how we believe a good employer should operate.

  • Flexibility that is real, not just a promise; You shape your working week around your life and your clients. We trust you to do that.
  • Pay that reflects your contribution; A competitive hourly rate based on the work you do, underpinned by our commitment to the Real Living Wage. We are proud supporters of that initiative — fair pay is not negotiable for us.
  • Holiday and sick pay that actually mean something; Extended holiday entitlement and comprehensive sick pay. If you are unwell, you should not be worrying about your income.
  • A menopause-positive workplace; We take this seriously. Many of our team are women, and we have created an environment where menopause is talked about openly and supported practically.
  • Mental health support for everyone; Access to mental health services as a matter of course — not as a crisis measure, but as a normal part of looking after yourself and doing demanding work sustainably.
  • We cover the costs that matter; Insurance, training, PPC supervision and accreditation costs are all covered by the Trust. If you work across more than one provider, these costs are fairly pro-rated. You should not be out of pocket for being professional.
  • An admin team that has your back; Our dedicated administrative team handles all client-facing work outside the mediation room — correspondence, scheduling, documentation, compliance. You focus on mediation. We handle the rest.
