Description

This one-hour CPD Lunch and Learn explores the Separated Parenting Programme Directory, the different parenting courses listed on it, and how mediators can use these programmes to support separating and separated parents. The session will be delivered by Denise Ingamels, consultant to the group and expert in parent support pathways.

Separated parenting programmes are short, quality-assured courses and support sessions designed to help parents reduce conflict, improve communication, and focus on their children’s wellbeing as their family changes. The Directory brings together a range of trusted programmes — from structured weekly sessions and workshops to flexible online modules — so parents can find the course that best fits their needs. SPPD+1

This session will give mediators a detailed overview of what these programmes involve, who they are for, and how they complement mediation practice. Participants will gain practical insight into when and how to signpost or integrate programme attendance into their work with clients, before, during or after mediation.

The session will cover:

  • What the Separated Parenting Programme Directory is and why it matters.
  • The variety of courses available — from evidence-based structured programmes to flexible online options — and what they offer parents.
  • What parents can expect to learn in these courses, including communication strategies, conflict reduction tools, and co-parenting skills.
  • How mediators can use the Directory to support parents in choosing and engaging with appropriate programmes.
  • When programmes might be most beneficial in the mediation journey.
  • Practical tips for introducing, explaining and following up on parenting programme referrals.

Who should attend:

  • Family mediators (legal aid and private).
  • Trainee and newly accredited mediators.
  • Professionals working with separating and separated parents.
  • Anyone interested in practical, evidence-informed support options beyond the mediation room.

This session will equip mediators with the confidence to connect clients with high-quality separated parenting programmes and to see these courses as a valuable tool in helping families navigate separation more positively and constructively.
