James Pirie joins the Family Mediation Trust (FMT) with an extensive and distinguished career in law and mediation. With over 40 years of experience, James brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the team. His career began in 1983 as a practicing lawyer, where he developed a deep understanding of the complexities of family law.

In 1989, James expanded his practice to include mediation, recognizing the importance of resolving conflicts amicably and outside the courtroom. His dedication to finding collaborative solutions led him to become a collaborative lawyer in 2003, further broadening his approach to family law.

James’s commitment to advancing alternative dispute resolution methods continued as he became an arbitrator in 2012, providing fair and impartial resolutions to disputes. Most recently, in 2023, he became a one lawyer provider, solidifying his role as a versatile and comprehensive resource in the field of family law and mediation.

In addition to his new role at FMT, James is also a Director at Family Law in Partnership Ltd (FLiP), where he continues to contribute to the field with his extensive experience and innovative approaches.

"I see FMT as a dynamic organisation, properly at the leading edge of optimising outcomes for families. I hope to share my insights from practice over the last 40 years as a lawyer, a mediator, a collaborative lawyer, an arbitrator, and a one lawyer provider to help it maintain its startling momentum, but also for it to continue in the principled and wise groove that it has established for itself," says James.

James’s vision aligns perfectly with the mission of FMT, and his broad-ranging expertise promises to be a valuable asset in furthering the Trust's goals. His commitment to principled, wise, and effective family mediation ensures that FMT remains at the forefront of providing optimal outcomes for families in need.
